NEW DELHI: Tahawwur sunthe Pakistani-origin Canadian national accused of conspiring in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attackswas presented before Delhi’s Patiala House Court on Friday and remanded to judicial custody until June 6.Rana, 64, was extradited to India from the United States after the US Supreme Court rejected his final appeal against extradition on April 4. He was earlier sent to 18 days’ custody on April 10, which was later extended by the court.

According to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Rana played a critical role as a conspirator and close associate of David Coleman Headleyalso known as Daood Gilani, the Pakistani-American operative who conducted surveillance of targets prior to the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The NIA told the court that Headley had discussed the entire terror operation with Rana before travelling to India.Rana has also filed a plea through his legal representative seeking permission to speak with his family members. The plea was submitted on April 19.The announcement of Rana’s extradition to India came at the time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on his official visit to the United States. US President Donald Trump made the official announcement during the visit.The 26/11 attacks, carried out by ten Pakistani gunmen, targeted multiple locations in Mumbai including the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminusthe Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, the Oberoi Trident, and the Nariman House Jewish centre. The coordinated attack lasted nearly 60 hours and claimed 166 lives, injuring hundreds more, in one of the deadliest terror strikes in India’s history.Rana’s extradition and ongoing legal proceedings mark a significant development in the long-running investigation into the 2008 attacks.
